Art Basel began as a conversation in a pub, in 1969, according to legend. Today, every June, it is one of the central destinations of art lovers worldwide, and we in South Florida know it as a major event in Miami Beach every December. Art Basel now spills over into Kleinbasel for its “Parcours”, a sort of art treasure hunt, where viewers follow a map in search of 15 interventions by renowned international artists into the fabric of this historical neighborhood. An exploration of the city also leads to the whimsical water fountain sculpture of Jean Tinguely, similar to the one outside the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and there is a major sculpture by Thomas Schutte installed in the highly decorated 16th century Town Hall. Fondation Beyeler is another art destination special to this city, a short trolley ride away, and had a major exhibit of work by Gerhard Richter. The city is filled with satellite art fairs, museums, galleries, posters and banners to announce the various exhibitions and events. Elle Schorr has been exploring the world through a camera all of her adult life, and has always been excited by contemporary art, architecture and the power of photography. After a career in clinical social work, she moved from New York to Lake Worth, Florida, and focused her new freedom on using her camera to capture the transitory energy of the urban environment. Ms. Schorr has shown her work widely, and will have work in the Miami Photo Salon Festival during Miami Art Week in December, and at ARTHouse 429 in Northwood. She created and leads the ongoing series of Art Salons at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach twice monthly. These conversations offer professional artists in South Florida a platform to explore their work in relation to the broader world of contemporary conceptual art. ELLE SCHORR'S WEB SITE |
