KRISTIN MILLER HOPKINS
"SPACES OF THE HOME"
Presented on: Tuesday, Jun 18th, 2013

Kristin Miller Hopkins, is an artist, designer, and educator. Her fine artwork creates habitats, investigates spaces of the home and uses natural or delicate materials as a medium for questioning. She is interested in the delicate layering of mediums and often use paper, printmaking, photography and site-specific installation to communicate ideas.

Kristin says: "The “Family Trees” series is a body of work of mixed media collages which represent abstract wonderings and wanderings of ideas surrounding family trees and the concept of nature vs. nurture. I made these in my last trimester of pregnancy – wandering parks and beaches while thinking of genealogy and hereditary traits. Which genes would be passed on in my future family? My grandparents have always had a large family tree drawing in their hallway, families added each generation in neat penmanship. The shape of it, its spindly sections juxtaposed with families plump with people, always reminded me of root systems. I am rooted in these drawings and influenced by trees and sea life. Nature around us gives us information on our physical world in the same way that our families give us information on our bodily world."

Kristin's work has been exhibited locally and nationally over the last 10 years, including a recent piece, “Cutting Words” - a large scale paper banner installation exhibiting at Whitespace Collection for the 2011-2012 season and a solo exhibition, “Family Trees” of mixed media collages at the Palm Beach Cultural Council Museum in December 2012 and at Art Palm Beach 2012 and 2013.

Kristin has an M.F.A. in Visual Studies from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY and a B.A. in Studio Art from Florida State University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art + Design at Palm Beach State College, and lives in Lake Worth.
