ELIZABETH REED AND ELLE SCHORR
"BASEL, SWITZERLAND:
TWO PERSPECTIVES ON ART BASEL 2014" PART 1 ELIZABETH REED
Presented on: Tuesday, Nov 4th, 2014

Have you wondered what happens in Art Basel in Switzerland each year, how it’s the same and how it is different from the one in Miami Beach? Artist Elizabeth Reed drove across Europe from her year long exploration of Italy to see Art Basel before returning to South Florida, and photographer / Art Salon facilitator Elle Schorr flew over to see it as part of a trip to Paris and Switzerland. Elle and Elizabeth missed each other by one day at Art Basel. This art salon is a chance to share their impressions of the gorgeous new Herzog and de Meuron building that now houses Art Basel, of the art work throughout the city and of the installations and galleries inside, with all, as well as with each other.

Art Basel began as a conversation in a pub, in 1969, according to legend. Today, every June, it is one of the central destinations of art lovers worldwide, and we in South Florida know it as a major event in Miami Beach every December. Art Basel now spills over into Kleinbasel for its “Parcours”, a sort of art treasure hunt, where viewers follow a map in search of 15 interventions by renowned international artists into the fabric of this historical neighborhood. An exploration of the city also leads to the whimsical water fountain sculpture of Jean Tinguely, similar to the one outside the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and there is a major sculpture by Thomas Schutte installed in the highly decorated 16th century Town Hall. Fondation Beyeler is another art destination special to this city, a short trolley ride away, and had a major exhibit of work by Gerhard Richter. The city is filled with satellite art fairs, museums, galleries, posters and banners to announce the various exhibitions and events.

Elizabeth Reed is a Broward County artist known for her “Visual Archaeology” series of drawings and paintings. This work combines unrelated images to create stories of our relationship with nature. Elizabeth studied illustration and drawing at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, as well as at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, and has been part of the faculty of The Coral Springs Museum of Art, The Armory Art Center, ArtServe and The Boca Raton Museum of Art - The Art School.

Elizabeth has spent the last year living in Italy with her husband, who was one of the marine salvage engineers who raised the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship in Isola del Giglio. She traveled extensively in Italy and made the trip to Basel Switzerland for Art Basel.
