VIRGINIA FIFIELD
"CONTEMPORARY REALISM IN CHARCOAL DRAWING"
Presented on: Tuesday, Jun 3rd, 2014

Virginia Fifield discusses the development of her current series of large charcoal drawings of nature subjects. Her work explores how our perception of self and sense of dominance and ownership shapes and distorts our vision and understanding of the natural world. Highly realistic images of animal subjects are “re-presented” in a stark, over-scale format, deliberately devoid of color and context to initiate a deeper contemplation about our coexistence with the natural world.

Fifield is originally from Toronto, Canada where she earned her BFA from York University and studied Architecture at the University of Toronto. There her work was exhibited in galleries and is held in public and private collections. Since moving to Florida, she has won awards in the Boca Raton Museum of Art “60th Annual All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition” and Best in Show in “Art Florida” 2008 and 2010. Her solo exhibitions at Nova Southeastern University and the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood have received critical acclaim. She was featured on both PBS’s TV shows “Art Street” and recently on “Art Loft”. Her work is exhibited internationally with the Opera Gallery.
