RENEE PHILLIPS
PROCESS, EXPERIMENTATION AND NFT'S AS A TOOL FOR INSPIRATION
Presented on: Tuesday, Mar 7th, 2023

As a process-based artist inspired by macro and micro visions of Earth’s surface, I explore the layering of color, and manipulation of paint, to achieve sculptural-like results that droop, ripple, crack and pool off of the surface. Using color as the raw material, I navigate the line between painting and sculpture.

Exploring color as a communicator of energy and stored personal information, I engage with specific environments to ignite color visions and inform my layering process. My entire body is activated while pouring thick layers of latex paint or colorful veils of spray paint. In order to unveil each color's signature effect, I further engage the elements of wind, water, heat and gravity. Each color has a different textural characteristic which is revealed over a series of days or weeks as the painting is manipulated with the elements.

The past year marked a shift in my process with the emergence of NFT’s. This opened the door for collaboration with 3D digital artists to make my artwork come alive as animated paintings. The results have propagated back into my physical process, shifting my color, compositions, and layering techniques.

The daughter of a scientist and a lover of nature, Phillips grew up between the South Florida beaches and the Colorado mountains and, at a young age, learned through hands-on exploration of her environment. She received her BA in Fine Art from the University of Miami, FL, and continued her art education at the University of Paris, France, and the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

Recent shows internationally include the DeJi Museum, China and Kunstwerk Gallerie Berlin, Germany. National shows include the Coral Springs Art Museum, Soho House West Hollywood, CA, Aqua Art Miami, Pen & Brush NYC, and Muriel Guepin Gallery NYC.

Phillips is currently an Artist in Residence at the Arts Warehouse in Delray Beach, Fl., where she co-curated the recent PINK exhibition, with artist Dana Donaty,

Upcoming shows include "Wavelengths", IW Gallery, New York, NY, April, 2023, and Phillips’ 1st public art project, “Mindscapes”, which will debut at the Mandel Public Library’s Urban Living Room later this month. The installation will feature her largest and most advanced animated painting to date, alongside physical paintings and sculptures.
