KHAULAH NAIMA NURUDDIN
"LAYERS UPON LAYERS: SCRATCHING INTO BEING."

Khaulah Naima Nuruddin is a multimedia artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who lives and works in South Florida. Nuruddin’s work explores the intersections of personal expression and social commentary by initiating public discussion of race, sexuality and the social transfer inherent to her work as a Black visual artist. Her solo exhibition, at under the bridge / Bridge Red in North Miami, was titled "Not For Sale: Not Today" through March 1. This new work, curated by Tayina Deravile, addressed the complexities of being a Black woman navigating social systems that are deliberately designed to oppress, a celebratory acknowledgment of the work Black Women do to survive and thrive beyond barriers.

Nuruddin is also one of three artists who's work is on view in "Chandelle" at Art's Up, in FATVIllage, NW 1st St., Fort Lauderdale. It can be seen during last Saturday Art Walks through June 27.

Nuruddin’s meticulous, laborious drawings (some combined with photographic elements), paintings, and installations with ceramics, cast body parts and found objects are representative of the thousands of hours beyond the so-called “norm” of work that a Black woman must manage to gain freedom and success. These dynamic works are quiet and intense, offering the viewer privileged access to an experience that may not be their own.

Nuruddin earned her BFA from The University of South Florida and her MFA from Florida Atlantic University. She is an adjunct studio-art instructor and serves as Curator and Exhibitions Manager for the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach.
