MARTIN CASUSO
"REVISITING THE (PRE)OCCUPATIONS OF AN UN-MARRIED UNCLE"
Presented on: Tuesday, Nov 5th, 2019

Martin Casuso is known for his sculptures and installations made of brightly colored color-field knit covered boards, found and made textiles and assorted found objects, with occasional stop-motion animation videos. He says: " The basis for all my work originates from the domestic sphere; the themes often subconscious preoccupations with personal memory. Found household objects and discards, often thrift store or recycled finds, as well as images from film or television, craft materials and techniques come together to acknowledge an affinity with all things hidden or overlooked. The manipulation or transformations in my pieces follow Jasper Johns’ dictum: 'Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it. Do something else to it.' You will find varied media (video, site specific installation, sculptural objects of ceramic or yarn", taking them from objects of use to objects of contemplation."

Born, raised and schooled in Miami, Martin Casuso is the product of a Cuban Freudian analyst father and Dutch born artist mother. A continuous late bloomer, he received his BFA in Mixed Media from Florida International University at 40 and an MFA in Sculpture from The University of Miami at 50.

Martin's work will be in an exhibition of artist- made books at LNS Gallery in Miami, from Nov. 2nd, 2019 to January 4th, 2020, called The Artful Book, 2019, concurrent to the Miami Book Fair. He will also be in two shows next spring, “Not for Sale” at the Laundromat in Little Haiti in April, and another involving airplane models, at the Coral Gables Museum (date unknown).
