Nadine Saitlin is known as a practicing artist and as an art educator, based in South Florida and Chicago. Her recent work comes from two separate ideas. She explains: "… ‘The Good Earth’ focuses on my close connection to the natural world and includes sculptural wrappings, and realistic drawings of these objects. ‘Images of the Mind’ are abstract expressionist paintings, drawings and vessels where colorful shapes and seductive forms play on the surface creating what has been described as biomorphic whimsy." GOOD EARTH Throughout time, objects have been made from natural materials. As these materials are fashioned into objects they take on symbolic meaning. Some include the amulet, fetish, and totem. My own process begins with a piece of wood, branch or seed that is then wrapped and adorned with twine, raffia and leather and enhanced with beads and feathers. Sometimes an object resembles an artifact from the past, a primitive tool or I am making a statement about protecting the environment. “Portraits” of the objects are then drawn in pencil or painted in acrylics. The objects are enlarged to create heightened realism and provoke exploration between object and the drawing. IMAGES OF THE MIND The goal of my abstract artwork is to create surfaces and provocative forms that involve the audience in a visual adventure. I want the viewer to respond to the emotional qualities within the work, identify references to objects and make them concrete in a story of the mind. My inspiration comes from everywhere. I find when sketching, shapes appear that remind me of experiences, objects or places I’ve seen. The development of the forms, use of color and the structure of compositions are solely from my imagination. I use traditional art materials, pencil, pen, opaque acrylic matte color on canvas, cradleboard or paper. My Painted Vessels are made from 3-D natural gourds. The form becomes the canvas, and the images are rendered on the gourd with acrylic paint and pen and then sealed. Saitlin has studios in Boca Raton, FL and Chicago IL. In Boca Raton, she exhibits with the National Association of Women Artists, FL Chapter (NAWA,FL), Boca Raton Museum Artist Guild, Florida Artist Group (FLAG), Florida Watercolor Society, and in competitive national shows. In Chicago, she exhibits with the Chicago Society of Artists Inc. (CSA). She has gallery representation with the Boca Raton Museum Artist Guild, Emerge Gallery, Saugerties NY, and DH International Gallery, Georgia. Her artwork was seen recently in “Earthly Good from Raw Materials” a two person show at Eissey Gallery, Palm Beach State College, and also exhibited at Spectrum during Art Basel Week, Art Expo N.Y., and the 27th Annual All Florida Juried Art Show, Martin County. Her awards include: Dick Blick purchase prize, Best of Show Kathryn Butler Gallery, Best of Show All Florida Exhibition Boca Raton Museum of Art. Artwork is in many private collections and her paintings have been seen on the cover of Playbill at Kravis Center for the Arts’, on the wall at Palm Beach International Airport, and published in "A Walk Into Abstraction", ebook, Vol. #6 by Sue St. John. As Associate Professor, at Chicago State University, she taught visual art, and as the Executive Director of the Illinois Alliance of Arts Education, she managed the activities of the advocacy organization, an outreach program of the Kennedy Center. As Associate Director at CEMREL, Inc. a national research and development laboratory, she created educational materials in the arts and directed the first Visual Art National Endowment for the Arts, Artist-In-Residence program. Saitlin earned an under graduate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and two post graduate Master degrees from University of Illinois, Champaign, and Michigan State University, East Lansing.
